138 Days

around the world in 20 weeks

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Sam, Antha and Andrew on a doorstep in PA. With Tate, we knocked on 300 doors.

We hadn't canvassed in a while and must have missed it, because we spent a long day in Pennsylvania knocking on doors for Obama before the primary there. Antha went back for 12 more hours of knocking the day before election day. Obama didn't win PA in the primary, but he is the nominee. So we feel good about that.

All About Us

This fall, Antha was in the Twin Cities working for the Obama campaign and Sam stayed in New York, when he wasn't visiting Minnesota and getting put to work.

Now we're taking a good chunk of time off (5 months, or 20 weeks, or 138 days) to travel around the world.

We made the decisions about where to go in the same way we decide most things--took some guesses and pulled the trigger when the deadline (in this case the cutoff for ticket purchase) approached.

  • Sister of My Heart
  • Three Cups of Tea
  • Shantaram- Gregory

  • A Long Way Gone- Beah
  • Saturday- McEwan
  • Angel of Darkness- Carr
  • American Pastoral- Roth

  • Murder on the Orient Express- Christie
  • The White Tiger - Adiga

Packing List

  • Tea bags. and 3 in 1 coffee mix
  • Sporken. Awesome spoon knife fork combo purchased in New Zealand.
  • Headlamps.
  • Sunscreen. Um why impossible to procure only in the places I need it?
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Rubber stopper for the sink--doing laundry. We forgot this. But man, if we had one, it would be so great
  • First aid kit-chock full even though all we ever use are bandaids and neosporin, and on bad days, immodium
  • Rope (for drying laundry or for hanging a mosquito net)
